BUILDING MATERIALS

PROJECT 1 // Famous Architect

For the first project, we are required to do the research of the famous architect in a group of 3. Which architect and building that were chosen by us is Ken Yeang and National Library Singapore. This project is good in helping students to explore the characteristics of the materials, the implication of the material and the design. Besides, we have to choose minimum 3 of these materials (stones, concrete, bricks, glass).

In a group of 6, students are to select an exciting commercial building that can give you experience in exploring most of the building materials covered in the module. For the group board part, we need to do a brief introduction of the selected building & reason for selecting the space, mood board which included photo and designed layout, drawings (plan, section and elevation) and application of materials (15 materials). For the individual board, we need to explain i) the design intention and concept and how that has influenced selection of materials ii) space analysis, we need to experience within the space and figure out how the material selection and its application within the space affect user experience.

The commercial building that we chose to do is Empire Damansara and I chose Qliq Damansara Hotel Lobby as my individual project.

PROJECT 2 // “Form, Space & Pattern: An Experiential Exploration”

REFLECTION

After I finished this module, I found that actually Building Material is a good platform for us to understand the materials.Project 1 helped us to know more about famous architect and how their design concept get translated into the building. Project 2 helped us to observe how the materials implicate with the structure and design.
